The morning is at leisure. This afternoon you will be transferred by road to the Ngorongoro Crater where the next two nights are spent at a lodge on the crater rim.
ACCOMMODATIONS: NGORONGORO SERENA LODGE (1 triple)
This unique lodge clings to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, the largest and most perfect volcanic crater on Earth. Long and low, the lodge is built from local river stone and camouflaged with indigenous vines.
Hugging the contours of the jagged Crater rim, the lodge takes its inspiration from the so- called ‘Cradle of Mankind’, the prehistoric site of Olduvai Gorge, which lies close by. Linked by arched stone passages and timbered decks, its walls are decorated with stylized prehistoric cave paintings and lit by flaring torches. At the stone heart of the
lodge burns a glowing fire, which is kept constantly alight. Decorated with cave paintings, the rooms are strung around the Crater rim. Each has its own rock- enclosed balcony, and all enjoy completely uninterrupted views of the volcanic amphitheater far below.
The rooms feature brass lamps, embossed leather headboards, wildwood mirrors, Maasai carvings and stylized prehistoric cave paintings. Room facilities include telephone, WiFi, laundry services, and safe.
The split-level rock-built dining and bar area features a wall of windows, which look down on to the constantly changing vistas of the crater below while double doors lead out on to a broad viewing terrace. Clustered around a glowing central fireplace, the space is decorated with prehistoric cave paintings and lit by stylized torches. Breakfast and lunch are presented in buffet-style. Fixed dinner menus feature a salad buffet, soup, entrée, pudding, cheese and biscuits and tea or coffee. Bush dining for breakfast, lunch, or dinner can also be arranged. (B,L,D)
JUL 26 THU
This morning descend to the crater floor some 2000 feet below the rim for a half day of exploring in this extinct, collapsed volcano. Within the 100 square miles of the crater is one of the densest concentrations of game to be found in Africa. Acclaimed as one of the wonders of the Natural World, the Crater is a veritable haven for wildlife.
Elephants amble along well-worn tracks while large prides of lion jealously guard their territorial domain. Gazelle quietly gaze, surrounded by zebra and wildebeest, whilst the endangered rhino, ever vigilant, feeds not far from the lake. Lake Magadi, the permanent water source with Ngorongoro Crater, often seems to be tinged pink when the throngs of flamingo congregate for food. Ngorongoro bird-life matches the animal population for variety and species.
